Community Middle School Receives Technology Grant

Technology grants for Rural Schools program was created to help meet the growing need for innovative technology in the classroom. The grants are funded by a donation from Rural Telephone Finance Cooperative (RTFC) and strive to help public schools in rural areas served by OPASTCO members bring modern computers to every classroom, connect schools to the information superhighway and make sure that effective and engaging software and online resources will be an integral part of the school curriculum. In 2009, thanks to RTFC’s generous contribution, the Foundation for Rural Education and Development (FRED) awarded $50,000 in grants to 8 schools in rural areas. Community Middle School of Unionville, Tennessee was one of these recipients. Ms. Betsy Norris, Grant Coordinator for the Bedford County School System was instrumental in applying for and receiving this grant. We also want to recognize Dee McCullough, Principal of Community Middle School for his contribution to motivate and inspire students by incorporating new, innovative technology into the classroom. United Telephone Company was proud to write a letter of nomination for Community Middle School and we congratulate them on this award. For more information about this program, visit www.fred.org.

UTC Announces The 2009 UTC Coloring Contest Winners

The 2009 United Telephone Coloring Contest gave second grade students in our service area the opportunity to show their artistic talent while demonstrating their understanding of technology. The UTC staff enjoyed looking at all the great entries that the students submitted as each child put their own personality into the artwork.

This year’s coloring poster was designed to highlight UTC’s Telecom Park website called Saturdayville located at www.united.net. Saturdayville is dedicated to children and parents spending quality time together online. With special sections for Preschool, Kindergarten through second grade and third through fifth, United Telephone wants to encourage a safe, online learning experience.

All the students that participated in the contest enjoyed a classroom Popsicle party. The winner from each classroom received an award of a $10 Wal-Mart gift card and the overall winner from each school received a special award of a $25 Wal-Mart gift card.

This year’s winners were:

Chapel Hill Elementary

College Grove Elementary
